CO-PARENTING

Anchor 1

AGREE ON GROUND RULES AND BASICS:

While you and your ex-spouse likely have agreed on drop off / pick up dates and times, co-parenting is about a collective approach to raising your child, and how the two of you will manage to resolve future challenges between each other and your child.

THINK ABOUT THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS AND CREATE A PLAN:

  • Changes to the existing schedules.  Circumstances change; be flexible and communicate.

  • Try to agree on basic house rules and discipline for consistency.

  • Methods of communication.  Text messaging might seem like the easy answer, but the tone can be misinterpreted and lead to unwarranted escalations. Sometimes the dreaded call is simply needed, or using specific programs like "My Family Wizard" and "Talking Parents" that monitor texts and emails.

  • New romantic interest. Nobody likes to address these complications, but each of you are likely to move on, and how you manage through this will help your child learn healthy relationships.
